Marisa sent a message to Stephen Burke CEO, NBCUniversal, Inc. that said:
Dear NBC,
I have a serious concern about your choice of violent commercials promoting upcoming TV series programs. I was sitting with my 11 year old son this past Sunday afternoon watching an NFL football game, when shootings, loud explosions and violent scenes appeared. This is no less than an assault on our senses and cannot be tolerated. It is atrocious and shows that NBC cares more about $$ than about what's going into a child's (or adult) brain. It is nauseating that our media chooses these sights and sounds with which to infiltrate our homes and get to our kids (and our own) eyes and ears. It is a vote in the favor of violence, and makes it seem like a "norm" to our kids: Guns pointed right at you, fierce, ugly expressions and words being screamed and yelled in your FACE. Just appalling. But no one seems to care.
Remember Columbine? Remember the theater shooting in Colorado? Do you think that these and others would occur if violent media was not introduced to them in some way? That their senses weren't assaulted daily by TV or video, to which they take on as role modeled behavior?
There have been 95 shootings on K-12 and college campuses â an average of nearly one every week â in the two years since the deadly attack at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Here's what I and others who care think: You feel no responsibility to the youth and adults of today, how violence permeates today's society, and that the media pushes this further. You feel there is no connection, right? It is sickening that my son and I had to sit there and view this assault on our senses. Just heartbreaking that you, as a network, think this is okay.
Sincerely,
Marisa, a concerned and outraged parent
