Safety Hypocrite!!!
I am an auditor in the Inventory Control department at the Fred Meyer Distribution Center in Clackamas OR, but I am currently suspended from work waiting to see if I will be terminated because I refused to participate in an unsafe activity. Our department is currently auditing all the pallets for a new store in Happy Valley. On Tuesday, I was told to restack an unsafe pallet that I had audited on Monday. It was made up of liquid items and feminine hygiene products, which are very unstable. When we got halfway done, I suggested we make 2 small pallets instead of 1 large pallet for safety sake. I was told the pallet had to be 7 feet tall. This didn't make any sense to me, since a smaller pallet could be stacked on top of a pallet of totes, as is the normal procedure. On Monday, I had been hit in the shoulder by a falling case, and just 1hour prior to my suspension, I narrowly avoided being hit by a case of shampoo, that fell off the top of a pallet I was auditing. Our BRI goals are a joke, except for the one I suggested, which is to "Use both hand when lifting items". The other 2 goals are "Pushing in your chair when leaving your desk" (which doesn't really affect safety since the chairs are inside of very small cubicles), and "Sitting upright in your chair". I have never heard of someone getting hurt from poor posture, but if you take a 20 pound case of shampoo to the side of your face because it fell off the top of a pallet, then that can do some real damage. There is a lot of talk about safety, but when you raise a concern about having to perform an unsafe action, you are labeled insubordinate.
Good Luck,
Chris
