Greetings Mr. Murren,
My name is Alex Cruz Jr. I am from San Bernardino in Southern California. I am 19 years old and I am a San Bernardino Police Explorer for the city of San Bernardino. The Explorer program is a non-profit program that gives kids between the ages of 14 to 21 an insight to the law enforcement profession. We learn the basics of being a police officer. including discipline, dedication, selflessness, and service to the community. We also learn the basics of the penal codes and ten codes. Explorers have to attend an academy in order to be completely involved in the program. Once accepted they will receive their uniform and be able to take advantage of opportunities such as explorer competitions which test our knowledge of policing through oral interviews, scenario reenactment such as active shooter situations or traffic stops, and physical agility. I have been an explorer now for about four years now and we have been to a few explorer competitions in that short amount of time, but never a national competition such as the one in Las Vegas every year. We have won 1st place, second place, and third places trophies at every competition that we have attended.
I am writing this email in hopes that you would be generous to consider donating to our post. We do not come from money and have to fundraise everything ourselves. As a group we give back to the community through active service such as helping in the conducting of DUI Checkpoints, traffic control at marathons and races, help with police training such as role playing for the swat team or giving presentations and insight on the police department to the citizens, hosting crime victims vigil every year to remember those families and the loved ones lost to crime, washing the police units in order to keep them clean for the next week, and raising money every year for the Southern California Special Olympics through Tip-A-Cop events where police and explorers team up with waitresses and waiters to serve food and service tables while asking for a small donation to contribute to the special Olympics. These are few of the events and services we do to give to the people of the city of San Bernardino.
