Ben sent a message to W. Craig Jelinek President and Chief Executive Officer of Costco Wholesale Corporation email address that said:
Dear Craig,
Costco has developed a habit of wrapping nearly everything it sells in plastic. Costco has no control over what the customers do with that plastic, and it is a safe bet that most of it ends up in landfills, the remainder ends up out and about to eventually get into the water or into the stomachs of animals, birds, fish, what have you, who then starve with that stomach full of plastic and no room for food.
I suspect that as CEO you are in a position to change that, and so I'm encouraging you to do so. Costco ought to take responsibility for its role in plasticizing the waters of the world and starving animals to death.
Actually even worse is the use of styrofoam. It often gets away from garbage collections as it gets blown around in the wind. From there on it falls apart in gazillions of little 'bite-size' pieces that look like seeds, and do get picked up and swallowed by birds, etc.
So please, if you can help it: Please do reduce and then eliminate the use of both plastic wrap and styrofoam in the products Costco sells. The living world will very much appreciate your doing so.
Thank you,
Ben
