Bill sent a message to Martin Winterkorn CEO, Volkswagen Group – email address that said:
Dear Sir,
I read an article in the St. Louis Post this morning on sinking VW sales in the U.S. I sincerely believe I have a way to fix that situation.
We have owned a VW beetle, hatchback and camper in our days. Very many people we know want a VW camper! Many have old models, but they are not updated enough in engine power to be very effective for traveling. Importing the VW camper would be the key to turning VW sales around.
I have called VW dealers several times to ask about the possibility of the return of the camper, and they say they wish they would be imported because they get quite a few calls asking about the possibility of importing one to the U.S.
In the U.S., the availability for compact van campers is extremely limited. We have looked at the Sprinter, $100,000 plus, and the Winnebago, $80,000 plus. We have friends who have bought those. However, they also said they would have bought a VW camper instead if it were available.
I believe if the VW camper were available in the U.S., people would buy them. If that happens, I am sure those customers would be looking at VW car models as well. As many families, our vehicles are one brand. It makes servicing easier.
If the VW camper becomes available in the U.S., I firmly believe that V.W. sales will skyrocket. They would be a huge seller with retired folks who do not want a big motorhome to handle and also with millennials who think the VW busses of the Woodstock era are the coolest thing around. Our son and several of his friends own VW 70s camper models, and they all would buy new ones for sure.
My wife and I are ready to buy a camper within the next year. Should the VW campers become available by then, please be kind enough to call me at 314-821-7287. We will not only be the first ones in line, but post the arrival on Facebook and tell every person we know.
Sincerely,
Bill
