Dear Mr. Stack,

I am writing to request your assistance.

By way of introduction I am the Program Consultant for The North Ward Center Inc.’s Life Skills Program. We provide Life Skills services to young adults aging out of the foster care system.

This year we entered wishes for many of our young adults through an organization called One Simple Wish. One of our youth wished for a bicycle and was granted a $200.00 Dick’s Sporting Goods gift card to purchase same. He is in need of a helmet and a bicycle lock as well.

I am at a loss to purchase all 3 items for $200.00. This is a young man who is truly succeeding against all odds. He is the first in his family to attend college, and has a goal of being a productive adult. He has a resiliency about him that I have not witnessed in my 45+ years in this field. He lives on campus at Bloomfield College and works at a nearby day care center. When I learned this past November, that he lived in a dorm room without a refrigerator, I purchased one for him the following weekend. As part of Life Skills training, he accompanied me to the store, compared prices and grocery shopped, again comparing prices and also learning to read nutrition labels along the way.

This bicycle would be the young man’s primary means of transportation. It will allow him to observe more of the world around him than ever before. To own a bicycle in this area without a lock, would defeat the purpose of ever getting a bike, in the first place. A helmet is required to ensure his safety.

I write to ask if there is some way you can please help us assist us in making this young adult’s dream come true. AR is 5’6” tall and 18 years old. We will celebrate his 19th birthday at the end of this month.

Any assistance you can provide will be most appreciated. Please contact me at 201-421-6256 with any questions.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,

Anita I. Costello
