Mark Gibeault sent a message to Kelly S. King - Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BBT Corporation - Email Address that said:

Good evening (I did not want to bother you as but could not find a way to email Mr. Henson)
Sir,
I have a checking account with BBT and on 5/9/17 a check was written to someone for $850 which I was unaware of, I did not write the check nor did i sign it or give permission for the check to be written. The person deposited the check in their bank account and on 5/12/17 BBT made the funds available to them.
However, there was only $600 and change available in my checking account (not including multiple pending debit card transactions). The check should have been returned as there was not enough money in my account to cover it, and i should have been charged the applicable fees.

Instead, BBT paid the $850, charged me the fees for insufficient funds which put me around $300 in the negative. As a result all the pending debit transactions which i had the funds to cover had the check been returned, became multiple $35 overdraft fees per day ($216 x2 days so far, tomorrow another $216).
As of 8:12 a.m today, when my debit card was being denied at the gas station, i checked my BBT app and i was $923 in the negative. This does not include the 10 or so debit transactions i have made on fri, sat, sun which are all still pending but the branch manage assured me i would receive a $35 overdraft per day for each transaction once it posted.

So the $1,043 i get paid every two weeks via direct deposit from my employer will (with no knowledge to me nor any warning/alerts which the lady at BBT set up on my phone for me over a year ago for text and email alerts) be completely taken to cover all the overdraft fees and still i will be in the negative probably another $1000 at least from the sounds if it.

Mr. Sitton, Branch Manager at Sunset Beach/Ocean Isle Beach spent an hour today looking through my account settings and iphone app, searched through my emails and text messages looking for alerts from BBT, sent me a test email while he had my phone in his hand, which never was received. Still he assured me that my account is set up to receive text and email alerts when balance drops below zero. He said he was not able to do anything to help me get this resolved except to file a dispute which would require me to testify against my childrens mother (whom lives with me until she finds full-time employment).
She has no checking account so daycare and rent, when cash is not in hand, is paid for with a check that i hand her. Often times the checks have to be post dated so i know for sure the funds will be available. Im not sure how she got my check book but she did and wrote the check w/o my knowledge and she is not on my bank account. I would have postdated the check for 5/19/17 (my next pay day). I dont argue that the $850 paid to the person she wrote the check to as in all fairness its for the rent.
The problem i have is that the check should have been returned and not paid due to lack of funds. The only overdraft protection i have in place for insufficient funds is for my debit card which i have a savings acct linked to and if a debit transaction is made and checking is unable to cover the total amount then the remainder is taken from my savings if there is enough to cover the difference and BBT charges flat $12 fee which covers the whole day in such a scenario.
Today Mr.Sitton said my account by default is set up to also have BBT cover debit and checks if there is insufficient funds available in checking and savings. This is not how it was explained to me by Mr.Sutton when he personally linked my savings to checking. It wad to cover any debits that checking account couldnt cover in full and as long as i had the funds to cover the difference in my savings then the process is automatic. This is not at all what has happened.

I really feel like i have been taken advantage of and i feel like it was done so intentionally. I hope this is truly not the case however the 1 1/2 hrs i spent with Mr.Sutton today trying to get this resolved did not leave me feeling confident that it was a mistake.
I have 3 children (3 yrs old , 12 14) that depend on me, solely. Its a challenge to provide for all of us but its my duty as a father and so far I have never failed to feed my children dinner every night. But the next 4 weeks that is going to become a reality if this doesnt get resolved.

Sir, please help me get this situation resolved.
Thank you
Mark Gibeault
