Hi there!

My name is Niamh, I am a 19 year old student from Dublin, Ireland and I have Friedrich's Ataxia, terminal genetic illness which affects my muscular and nervous systems. I am writing to you today with the hopes of possibly being able to ask you for a favour. I know that this is a bit of an odd request, so let me tell you a bit about myself and why I need your help!

I was diagnosed with this life-altering illness when I was thirteen, five years after my younger brother had been diagnosed, so it hit my small family very hard. Since Friedrich's Ataxia was introduced into my life all those years ago, I have always had a strong moral compass and a want to help others, because I am so grateful for the help that is given to me and that is available to me here in Ireland. Currently, I study European Studies in Trinity College Dublin, and my dream is to use the politics and language parts of my degree to someday work in the Third World with children with disabilities and to fight of their rights.

I had always promised myself that when I was old enough, I would volunteer in India or Africa over the summer and help children living in poverty or with disabilities. So, this year, because I am finally a self-sufficient adult, I applied to many over-seas volunteering programmes, but due to my ill health I was denied the opportunity. I am still so disappointed by this because its what Ive always wanted to do, but I dont let that stop me, and so I am continuing my search to fulfil my dream. This led me to apply to many ataxia organisations and clinics throughout the world, because they can appreciate me, my illness and the help I want to give.

I have sadly received no replies from east-to-reach countries like England or France, but I have recently gotten offers from Melbourne, Australia and Québec, Canada. I am absolutely over the moon at the prospect of taking a step towards my dream, but I am disappointed because I cannot afford the flights over. I know this is probably too much to ask, but I really need your help. Is there anything you can do to get me to either country?

Kindest regards,
Niamh
