Joyce sent a message to Marvin R. Ellison – President of J. C. Penney Company Inc.- email address that said:
Mr. Ellison - I would like to relate the shopping experience that my husband and I had this past weekend at the JC Penny store in Peabody, MA. We have not shopped Penny’s for a long time, though this weekend had occasion to look for an item at the Sephora store within Penny’s. My husband shopped a bit in the men’s downstairs, while I checked out the ladies departments upstairs. As I walked through the store I became more and more dismayed with the utter disaster in all departments - piles of clothing thrown on tables, clothing in heaps on the floor under the tables, rows of hanging items jammed together, impossible to figure sizes or see what was there, plus racks of absolutely awful clothing! I found no interest in looking further at anything, as it all looked like a huge messy yard sale. I headed downstairs to meet up with my husband whose first words were, “What a disaster!!” He had found the exact same situation and
couldn’t wait to leave the store. I stopped to comment to a young man at a checkout counter, and told him of the
unbelievable mess that the store was in. He was very uninterested in what I said, I ended my conversation by asking him to please relate our experience to management.
Several years ago when this Penny’s store made a complete makeover, we were pretty impressed with the
changes, looking at a store a little more upscale. What happened??? You certainly cannot want our experience repeated over and over with other customers - most people will not speak up, they will just shop somewhere else. Certainly with your previous retail experience, including Target, it’s hard to believe the
shape of this store would be acceptable to you. We shop at Kohl’s quite often, and even at big sale or holiday times,
the displays are kept neat, the aisles clear, quality merchandise organized.
If this is the ‘new’ Penny’s, it’s very sad that the company believes customers only want low prices and don’t care if they have to pick up clothing from the floor in order to check out merchandise.
