Mr. Lampert,
I am not going to spend an inordinate amount of time with this note, as I doubt you cherish unsolicited advice. You have one choice. Rebrand the Sears stores as KMART stores and fill the stores with merchandise comparable to Wal-Mart and Target. KMART is a good short name that will redefine itself well if it really is redefined.
Don't look for a seasoned person to do the redefine. Use a seasoned person to head the company. Hire a common sense person to operate the stores. This is not rocket science. This is actually quite simple, meet your customer's expectations and do it cheerfully.
