Philip sent a message to Joseph R. Swedish – President and Chief Executive Officer of Anthem, Inc. Email Address that said:
Mr. Sweedish,
Being a shareholder, I've followed closely the attempt to acquire CIGNA.
I believe that while it was unfair for the government to wait 1 year before filing suit, according to news reports that they're open to settlement talks show that their case is not the strongest.
Should Anthem wait and win at trial, it will probably not be in time to salvage the merger. I would suggest that you approach the government and ask them "what they want". A quick resolution of the case would permit Anthem the time it needs (prior to April 30) to secure the necessary remaining state approvals. Probably what they want today, is a large insurance company to pick up the slack caused by Aetna's announced plans to discontinue participation in a goodly number of exchanges.
Putting my arrogance aside, you folks are probably already pursuing this; but I felt compelled to share my thoughts with you.
Sincerely and best of luck reaching resolution,
Philip
