On April 1st, 2011 I purchased a nautical engine YAMAHA 115 HP, imported in Uruguay by DALSICAR S.A. This engine was installed on a fiberglass boat of 6,04 mt length, 2,24 mt width, 0,94 mt pitprop, 2,543 tons gross weight and 2,416 tons net weight. This engine was assembled in Paysandú by Mr. Mario Stagno, YAMAHA agent in our city.
As soon as the engine was placed on the boat, Mr. Stagno and I went to the river to appreciate its benefits. When maneuvering for reverse, abruptly the propeller was lost because it did not have the security key, failure that I fully attribute to installer, Mr Stagno. Afterwards a new propeller was bought at the cost to Mr. Stagno, in a different measure to the original arguing that the engine would improve its performance and would be faster.
After this problem was " solved " we took the boat to the river and after half an hour ride, the engine started to fail, making a noise similar to when a cylinder is lost. In view of this, Mr. Stagno changed one of the spark plugs since he considered this was the reason for the failure. I continued using the boat, but again I had carburization problems, and again went to Mr. Stagno agency. In this case, they saw that there was an important quantity of water in the fuel tank, which could be most surely the reason for these failures. I felt quite annoyed since could not understand how the tank had not been checked properly by the agent at the moment of assembling the boat, leaving old fuel remains in the tank.
As I continued using the boat, I had several caburation failures. In view of the lack of an adequate service by the agent, I called another mechanic (of my entire reliability) who detected air was entering in the fuel line that comes from the tank and he made a new instalation to solve this problem. Afterwards, the engine performed properly, though irregularly, with sporadic failures. The engine has approximately 100 hours of use, since it is only used during summer season and for short distances.
The services consisted in annual oil change with YAMAHA oil and were not done by Mr. Stagno since I had lost my confidence regarding his suitability.
In november 2015, after winter season in which the boat was no used, I took it to the river and, after several attempts, the engine started with an irregular speed. With the hand throttle I put it up to the maximun engine turns so that it would not turn off again. About one minute later, it turned off and never turned on again. My mechanic, who had done the basic services, found that two cylinders and the corresponding pistons and valves had been litteraly destroyed without any logical explanation.
I started to consult and tried to get a solution in Argentina, where I was informed that possibly the engine over turned and the prevention mechanism did not work.
In view of this situation, with the engine disassembled by my mechanic and, due to the high cost of any reparation, in April 2016 I came up to Mr. Stagnos Agency looking for an explanation for what had happened. After many calls and visits to Mr. Stagno, I received an approximate quotation of reparation cost, which is almost the same as buying a brand new engine.
Considering all reported facts, I hope you can understand my dissatisfaction since I bought a brand new YAMAHA engine convinced that I would not have any problem at the time of enjoying my boat. I deemed YAMAHA nautical equipment as 100% reliable. Regretfully, in light of above mentioned events, I feel very disappointed by the brand and the assistance and support which I I think it is far away from what YAMAHA deserves. Since the moment I first used the brand new engine in 2011, different problems arose which did not allow me to fully and safely enjoy my boat with my family all along these years.
