Akio Toyoda joined Toyota in 1984.[3] In 2000 he joined Toyota's board of directors.[4] In 2005 he was promoted to executive vice president.[5] In January 2009 he was announced as the forthcoming president of the company.[3] On June 23, 2009 he was confirmed as the new president of the company, along with four new executive vice presidents and eight new board members.[6] The previous president and CEO Katsuaki Watanabe became vice chairman replacing Katsuhiro Nakagawa.[7] In 2012, he was named Autocar's Man of the year.[8]
