Mr. Stephen Smith, also known as Steve, has been Chief Executive Officer of L.L.Bean Inc. since January 2016. Mr. Smith served as Chief Customer Officer of ASDA Stores Limited and served as its Chief Marketing Officer since May 2012. Mr. Smith served as Chief Marketing Officer of Asda. He joined Walmart International in July of 2011 as the chief marketing officer for Walmart China and senior vice president responsible for Sam's Club and New Formats. He spent nine years with Belgian-based supermarket retailer, Delhaize Group. He managed merchandising, marketing, strategy and communications through his career there for four retail banners within the Delhaize Group. He started his career with J. Walter Thompson in New York City in 1992 and then progressed through telecommunications and the media business with AT&T and Resort Sports Network, before joining Hannaford (New England-based, Delhaize-owned supermarket business) as Director of Marketing in 2002 - his entry into the supermarket business. He is also the co-chair of the marketing committee of The Consumer Goods Forum. He spent three years in Brussels, Belgium as a member of the Executive Committee for Delhaize Le Lion. He is an avid runner and basketball player, as well as a long-time Premier League fan with an allegiance to a large "United" club. Mr. Smith studied art history and physics at Dickinson College in Pennsylvania.
