T. V. Narendran joined Tata Steel in 1988 straight after his MBA from IIM Calcutta. He began his career in Tata Steel in its International Trading Division, where he worked from 1988 to 1997. He then moved to Dubai, where he looked after Tata Steel's exports to the Middle East. From 1997 to 2001, he worked in Tata Steel's marketing and sales division. From 2001 to 2003, he was the chief of marketing and sales of long products, and played a major role in building the Tata Tiscon brand. He played a leading role in the integration of NatSteel, Tata Steel's first overseas acquisition.[5]

Tata Steel has manufacturing operations in 26 countries, including Australia, China, India, the Netherlands, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom, and employs around 80,500 people.[2] Its largest plant is located inJamshedpur, Jharkhand. In 2007 Tata Steel acquired the UK-based steel maker Corus which was the largest international acquisition by an Indian company till that date.[4]

On February 12, 2012 Tata Steel completed 100 years of steel making in India.[7][8]
